Short for Marché International du Disque et de l'Edition Musicale, MIDEM is the world's largest music industry trade fair, which has been held annually at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France, since 1967. Bringing together musicians, businesspeople, cultural policy makers, and journalists from many countries, it provides a forum for business talks, discussing political and legal issues, and showcasing new artists, musical trends and music-related products. The day before MIDEM opens, begins MidemNet: conferences devoted to monetising music in the digital age. These continue throughout the market, in keeping with MIDEM's growing vocation to educate the industry about new revenue streams.

A marketplaceEdit

In spite of a large number of concerts, MIDEM considers itself primarily a marketplace, thus the artists present are those who either run an enterprise of their own, or have been invited to promote companies. Although major labels and other corporate actors dominate the scene at MIDEM, its events also include the International Indie Summit.
MIDEM also acts as a venue for the NRJ Music Awards (since 2000), where French radio station NRJ welcomes the world’s biggest pop stars to the Palais des Festivals the night before MIDEM begins.

MIDEM in numbersEdit

MIDEM 2011 was attended by 6,850 delegates from 3,120 companies (out of which 1,735 had stands or pavilions of their own) and 360 journalists, from a total of 77 countries. Although attendees come from all over the world, those from Western Europe and North America clearly dominate.
